What Resolution Are Instagram Reels? Quality Explained

There are two answers to this question and people usually want the second one. The first is the resolution Instagram recommends you upload. The second is the resolution and bitrate Instagram actually stores and serves, which is the file you get back if you download the Reel. They are not the same, and the gap between them explains almost every complaint about Reels looking soft.

The numbers

  • Recommended upload: 1080x1920, a 9:16 vertical frame, at 30 or 60 frames per second.
  • What Instagram stores: 1080x1920 in most cases, sometimes 720x1280 for older posts or uploads made on a poor connection.
  • Bitrate: typically 2 to 4 Mbps for the served copy, which is the number that matters most and the one nobody publishes.
  • Codec: H.264 video with AAC audio inside an MP4 container, which is why Reels play everywhere.
  • File size: a 30 second Reel is usually 4 to 10 MB.

That bitrate is the whole story. Resolution tells you how many pixels there are. Bitrate tells you how much information was kept to describe them. You can have a 1080x1920 file that looks terrible, and that is precisely what a heavily compressed Reel is.

Why Instagram compresses so hard

Instagram serves an enormous amount of video to phones on wildly variable connections, much of it on mobile data in places where mobile data is expensive. A file that starts playing in under a second on a weak signal is worth more to the platform than a file that looks perfect on a laptop.

So the encoder is tuned for fast start and small size, not for fidelity. That is a reasonable trade for the platform and an annoying one for anyone who cares about their footage.

Where the compression is visible

H.264 at a low bitrate fails in predictable places, and once you know them you will see them everywhere.

  • Fast motion. Anything panning quickly or shot handheld loses detail in the moving parts.
  • Fine texture. Hair, grass, fabric weave, water. These turn mushy first.
  • Confetti, rain, snow, sparks. Thousands of small moving elements is the worst case for any codec.
  • Gradients. Sunsets and studio backdrops get visible banding rather than smooth transitions.
  • Dark scenes. Shadow detail collapses into flat blocks.

Talking-head footage against a plain background survives compression far better than a dance clip with strobe lighting, which is why some Reels look crisp and others look like a 2009 YouTube video at identical settings.

Why a downloaded Reel looks worse than it did in the app

Usually it does not, and this is worth being precise about. The downloaded file is the same file the app streams. What changes is how you are viewing it.

In the app, the video plays on a small, bright, high density screen, in motion, usually while you are half paying attention. Compression artefacts are hidden by all four of those things. Pull the same file onto a laptop, play it in a window, pause it, and you are looking at exactly the same data under conditions that expose everything.

Motion is the biggest factor. A paused frame from any compressed video looks worse than the video playing at 30 frames per second, because your eye stops averaging across frames and starts inspecting one.

What creators can actually control

Not much on the way out, quite a lot on the way in.

  1. Export at exactly 1080x1920. Uploading 4K does not give you a better Reel, it gives Instagram more to throw away and sometimes a worse result.
  2. Export at a high bitrate, 10 to 15 Mbps or more. Instagram will re-encode it anyway, but a cleaner source produces a cleaner re-encode.
  3. Upload on wifi. Instagram's uploader downgrades on poor connections and will not tell you it did.
  4. Never upload a file you downloaded from another platform. Two rounds of compression is visibly worse than one, and platforms reduce the reach of video that has been through a competitor's encoder.
  5. Avoid heavy grain, strobing and confetti if the footage has to survive compression. The encoder handles them badly.

Aspect ratio, and the parts that get covered

Reels are 9:16, which is 1080x1920. Footage in any other shape gets letterboxed or cropped, and neither is good.

There is also a safe zone to respect. The interface covers the bottom of the frame with the caption, the audio label and the action buttons, and the top with the status bar. Anything important placed in roughly the bottom 320 pixels or the top 120 will be partly obscured while people are watching in the app. It reappears in a downloaded file, because the interface was never part of the video, but by then the moment has passed.

What this means when you download

You get exactly what Instagram stored: 1080x1920 H.264 in MP4, at the platform's bitrate. That file is clean, plays on everything, and imports into any editor. What it is not is the creator's original export, and no tool can retrieve detail the platform discarded on upload.

If two sites offer the same Reel and one claims 4K, it is upscaling. That produces a bigger file and a softer picture at the same time, which is the worst of both. How Reels compare to the other platforms

  • TikTok also stores 1080x1920 at a modest bitrate, and adds a watermark that Instagram does not.
  • YouTube Shorts allow the same 1080x1920 but YouTube's encoder is generally more generous with bitrate.
  • Facebook Reels are frequently cross posts of Instagram Reels and have therefore been compressed twice.

Instagram re-encodes at a bitrate around 2 to 4 Mbps, which is where fine detail and fast motion suffer. Exporting at exactly 1080x1920 with a high bitrate, and uploading on wifi, gives the encoder the best source to work from.

No, and it often makes a worse one. Instagram downscales to 1080x1920 anyway, and its downscaler is not as good as the one in your editing software. Resize before export instead.

No. The download returns the file Instagram stores and that is the ceiling. Any tool claiming 4K for a Reel is upscaling, which adds file size without adding detail.
