Where Do Downloaded Videos Go on iPhone? How to Find Them

Videos you download in Safari on iPhone go to the Files app, in a folder called Downloads, not to the Photos app. To get one into Photos, open it in Files, tap the share icon and choose Save Video. Videos saved from inside an app with its own save button, such as a camera roll option, usually go straight to Photos instead.

That split is the whole reason people think their downloads vanished. Below is where each kind of download ends up, how to find it quickly, and how to change the folder so it lands somewhere you will actually look.

Where Safari downloads go

Safari treats a video from a website as a file, the same way it treats a PDF. Files go to the Downloads folder in the Files app. Which Downloads folder depends on one setting:

• If iCloud Drive is switched on, the default is iCloud Drive, then Downloads. The video syncs to your other Apple devices, and it counts against your iCloud storage.
• If iCloud Drive is off, or you changed the setting, it is On My iPhone, then Downloads. The file stays on the phone only.

You can check or change this in Settings. Scroll to Safari (on recent versions of iOS it sits under Apps), tap Downloads, and pick iCloud Drive, On My iPhone or another folder of your choice.

The fastest way to find a download

1. Right after the download finishes, tap the downloads icon in Safari's address bar, or open the page menu and choose Downloads. You will see a list of recent files.
2. Tap the video to open it, or tap the small magnifier next to it to jump to its folder in Files.
3. Later on, open the Files app, tap Browse, and choose Downloads under Favorites. The Recents tab also shows it near the top for a while.

If you use Chrome on iPhone rather than Safari, downloads behave differently. Chrome keeps them in its own folder inside the Files app, under On My iPhone, and asks what to do with each file when it finishes.

How to move a downloaded video into Photos

Photos and Files are separate libraries. A video in Downloads will not show up in Photos until you copy it across, which takes a few seconds:

1. Open the Files app and go to Downloads.
2. Tap the video to open it.
3. Tap the share icon, the square with an arrow pointing up.
4. Choose Save Video. It now appears in Photos under Recents.

If Save Video does not appear in the share sheet, the file is probably in a format Photos cannot import, such as WebM. MP4 files always work, which is one reason our downloaders deliver MP4. You can also long press the file in Files and choose Share from the menu that appears.

Why a video seems to be missing from Photos

Sometimes you did save it to Photos and still cannot see it. The usual reason is the date. Photos sorts videos by the date stored inside the file, and a clip filmed two years ago can land two years back in your library rather than at the bottom where you expect it.

Two quick ways around that. Open the Photos app and look under Media Types, then Videos, which lists every video regardless of date. Or search for the word video in the search tab. Recently saved items also show up in the Recently Saved collection on newer versions of iOS.

Where videos go when an app saves them

Apps that have their own save option work differently from Safari. When TikTok, Instagram or your messaging app saves a video, it writes straight into your Photos library, because the app asked for permission to add photos when you first used that feature. Nothing appears in Files.

If that save does nothing, the app may not have permission. Go to Settings, find the app, tap Photos and allow Add Photos Only or Full Access. Without it the app has nowhere to put the file.

Downloading a video on iPhone step by step

Here is the full process with a web downloader, so you know where to look at every stage. We will use a post on X, but the same steps work with our Instagram Reels downloader, the TikTok downloader and the others.

1. In the X app, tap the share icon under the post and choose Copy link.
2. Open Safari and go to the Twitter video downloader. Paste the link and tap Download.
3. Pick a quality. Safari asks whether you want to download the file. Tap Download.
4. When the download icon in the address bar stops animating, the file is in Files, in Downloads.
5. Open it from there and use Save Video if you want it in Photos.

One thing to avoid: do not open the downloader from a link inside the X or Instagram app. Those apps open links in their own built-in browser, and that browser often cannot save files at all. When the download does not finish

• Storage is full. iOS often reports this as a generic failure. Check Settings, General, iPhone Storage.
• Low Power Mode is on. It pauses some background activity, so keep Safari open until the download completes.
• The file went to iCloud Drive and has not uploaded yet. It still shows in Files with a small cloud icon and plays once it syncs.
• A content blocker is interfering. Turn off extensions for the site from the page menu and try again.

Keeping your downloads tidy

Downloads fills up quietly. Every file you ever saved in Safari stays there until you delete it, and videos are large. Every so often, open Downloads, tap Select, and clear out anything you have already copied to Photos.

Safari can also do some of this for you. In the same Downloads settings screen there is an option to remove download list items after a day, after a successful download or manually. That clears the list in Safari only. The files themselves stay in the Downloads folder until you delete them.
