What you can download from Bluesky

Bluesky keeps things simpler than most platforms: one video per post, no stories and no private accounts. There are still a few kinds of post that behave differently.

Video posts
Clips uploaded straight to Bluesky, up to three minutes long. These download as MP4 at the resolution they were uploaded in, which is often higher than what the app plays back.
Quote posts
If the video belongs to the post being quoted, open that original post and copy its link. A quote post that adds its own video works directly.
GIFs from the picker
GIFs added through the GIF button are links to Tenor, not files uploaded to Bluesky, so there is nothing on Bluesky to download. Save those from Tenor itself.
Links to other sites
A post that shares a YouTube or news link shows a preview card, not a video. Paste the original link on the matching downloader page instead.

Why the download can look better than the app

When a video is posted to Bluesky, two things are kept. The original file is stored on the uploader's account server, and Bluesky's video service makes streaming copies at 360p and 720p that the app switches between depending on your connection.

Most downloaders grab one of the streaming copies, which caps you at 720p. We fetch the original instead. For a video shot on a recent phone that usually means 1080p and a noticeably sharper picture, particularly for text and fine detail. The trade-off is file size, since the original is usually several times larger than the 720p stream.

Getting the right link

A working link looks like bsky.app/profile/someone.bsky.social/post/ followed by a short code of letters and numbers. That code identifies the post, and it is the part we need. If your link stops at the username, it points at the profile rather than a post, so open the post first and copy again.

Handles can be custom domains, such as bsky.app/profile/nytimes.com/post/…, and those work the same way. Links that use the long account ID starting with did:plc also work.

Common problems and quick fixes

If you see an error, first check that the post still exists. A deleted post, or an account that has been taken down, fails in the same way because there is nothing left to read. A post that only shares a link or a picker GIF will also fail, since no video was ever uploaded to Bluesky.

On iPhone, a finished download that seems to have vanished is almost always in the Files app under Downloads rather than in Photos. On Android, check the Downloads folder in the Files app if your gallery has not picked it up yet.

Using the files you save

The MP4 uses H.264 video and AAC audio, so it opens in every phone gallery, desktop player and editor, from CapCut to Premiere, without converting. Vertical clips stay vertical and the original aspect ratio is kept.

If you are archiving posts, rename each file as it arrives. The default name comes from the post text, which may be long or empty. A short name with the account and date is far easier to find later.

Bluesky has no private accounts, so every post is public by design. Some people turn on a setting that asks apps not to show their posts to logged-out visitors. Treat that as a clear request: if someone has asked for that, do not download and share their videos.

Links from bsky.app work, with either a handle or a custom domain in them. Third party apps sometimes use their own web addresses. If yours does, open the post in the official app or on bsky.app and copy the link from there.
